Russia Builds Massive Radar Near NATO Border

Writer Clarence | by AfterPost | 20 October 26

Yes, Russia is building a massive new radar system just 20 miles from NATO territory, with potential reach to Britain. Satellite imagery confirmed Oct 19-20, 2026 shows three enormous arms of antenna masts, each roughly 500 meters long, under construction at Gvardeysk in Kaliningrad, between Poland and Lithuania. Experts assess it as an over-the-horizon (OTH) radar capable of detecting aircraft, warships and missiles from 550 to 2,000 miles (880-3,000km), enough to cover most of NATO Europe including Germany, France and the UK.

Images were taken by ICEYE, a Finnish-Polish SAR satellite company, and first published by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), then reported by The Times, Interia and http://UA.NEWS. Location is Gvardeysk, 20 miles from Polish border, 40 miles from Lithuania.

What is being built:

Not a conventional rotating radar. The Y-shaped layout with three 500m arms is classic for OTH-B (Over-The-Horizon Backscatter) or OTH surface-wave radar. Unlike line-of-sight radars limited to horizon (∼20-30 miles low), OTH bounces signals off ionosphere or follows sea surface, seeing far beyond curvature.

- Each arm:

∼500m long line of antenna masts, phased array

- Config:

3 arms radiating from central hub at 120 degrees

- Purpose:

Long-range early warning, air and sea surveillance, potentially ballistic missile detection and tracking
If specs match similar Russian systems like Container (29B6) or Sunflower, range is 1,000-3,000km. Times reports estimate 550-2,000 miles depending on final spec. That puts coverage:

- Berlin: ∼350 miles- Paris: ∼900 miles- London / Britain: ∼1,000 miles - within range- North Sea, Baltic Sea, much of North Atlantic approaches

Why Kaliningrad matters:

Kaliningrad is Russia's most militarized piece of real estate in Europe:
- Semi-exclave annexed by Stalin in 1945, kept after USSR collapse- Hosts Baltic Fleet at Baltiysk, Iskander-M ballistic missiles, S-400 air defense- Western intel estimates storage for up to 100 nuclear warheads; Poland and Lithuania believe warheads already deployed- Epicenter of GPS jamming: Lithuania counts at least 36 spoofing antennas there. Since 2022, continuous GPS interference has disrupted aviation and shipping across northeastern Europe, Poland, Germany, Scandinavia, Baltics- ICEYE also reports expansion in Karelia, Leningrad District, and S-400 launchers raised near Baltiysk
This radar turns Kaliningrad from just a missile base into a sensor hub that can watch NATO mobilization deep inside Europe.

How OTH radar works vs normal radar:

Normal radar: microwave, line-of-sight. OTH uses HF band (3-30 MHz) that reflects off ionosphere. Signal goes up, bounces, comes down far away, reflects off aircraft/ship, bounces back same path. Trade-off: lower resolution, huge antenna needed, but massive range and can detect stealthy targets that evade microwave radars.

NATO has similar: France's Nostradamus OTH in Dreux, Britain's PLUTO OTH at Akrotiri Sovereign Base in Cyprus. Russia already operates Container OTH near Saransk and Olenegorsk.

Why now:

Context is escalating hybrid war: Just this weekend Russia's Cosmos 2612 military satellite stalked ICEYE-X36 commercial SAR satellite that supplies imagery to Ukraine, closing to ∼500m in orbit, and Finland flagged Russian-owned holiday homes used as drone bases in Baltic. Building long-range radar in Kaliningrad fits doctrine: harden exclave, extend situational awareness, complicate NATO air operations.

It also sends message: Even if NATO reinforces Suwalki Gap, Russia claims ability to see deep.

FAQ

Is the Russia Kaliningrad radar real?

Yes. Verified by ICEYE SAR satellite imagery Oct 2026, published by FAZ and The Times. Construction at Gvardeysk visible with 3x 500m arms.

What type of radar is it?

Assessed as over-the-horizon (OTH) radar, likely OTH-B backscatter for long-range air and sea surveillance, missile early warning.

How far can Kaliningrad radar see?

Estimates 550-2,000 miles (880-3,000km) depending on final specs. Enough to cover Germany, France, Britain, North Sea, Baltic.

Why is Kaliningrad 20 miles from NATO?

Kaliningrad borders Poland (20 miles from Gvardeysk site) and Lithuania. It's Russian territory surrounded by NATO/EU, heavily militarized and source of GPS jamming.

Can it detect stealth aircraft?

OTH radars using HF band are theoretically better at detecting low-observable aircraft than microwave radars because stealth shaping is optimized for higher frequencies, but resolution is poor and tracking is difficult.
