Carnival atmosphere south square samba, violent north.

Marseille: Town hall breached, looted shops, mayor said vandalised, police station windows smashed, smoke grenades thrown inside. Protesters shouted "We're taking the Bastille" ramming mayor's door with barriers.
Rennes, Toulouse, Angers, Nantes also clashes. Interior Ministry blamed ultra-left, black bloc.

What Macron says:

Appealed for calm Oct 17 eve in Brussels: "Constitutional right to protest but need to respect people, property, commitment not to insult or destroy."
