Burkina Faso Develops 8 New Rice Varieties With Nuclear

Writer Clarence | by AfterPost | 17 October 26

Scientists in Burkina Faso have used nuclear techniques to develop eight new rice varieties that yield more, mature faster and offer improved grain qualities, helping boost local food production and reduce reliance on rice imports. Released in 2025, the varieties show how scientific innovation can move from the laboratory to farmers’ fields, supported by IAEA and FAO under Atoms4Food.

Rice consumption in Burkina Faso has doubled in past decade, yet about 50% of rice consumed is still imported. Government aims food sovereignty under Agropastoral Offensive 2023-2025.

What they achieved:

Eight varieties officially released in national catalogue in 2025. Yield 9 to 11 tonnes per hectare, maturing in just 95 to 106 days. Existing national catalogue varieties typically 4-6 tonnes per hectare, longer cycle. In Banzon plain trials, top line hit 11.76 tonnes/ha.

Traits selected for local needs: 2 with large grains, 2 rich in resistant starch for nutrition, 1 waxy sticky rice preferred for local dishes, plus high tillering for fodder. Early flowering lines help escape post-flowering drought when rains stop early.

How nuclear technique works:

Not GMO. Mutation breeding uses gamma rays to speed up natural genetic variation. Seeds irradiated at IAEA lab in Seibersdorf, then screened for desirable traits in Burkina Faso at INERA and University Joseph Ki-Zerbo.

Process: FKR45N and FKR47N parent lines irradiated, mutant lines M450P1/350, M422P3/300 selected. M422P3/300 improved yield 20%, M450P2S/350 improved 120% vs parent. Multi-location testing, farmer evaluation, then official release. Supported by IAEA technical cooperation BFK5019, CRP Striga D25005, capacity building of engineers, PhD candidates like Gloria Kabré.

IAEA and FAO Atoms4Food launched 2023. Burkina Faso first country assessment May-June 2025, 10 experts visited labs, identified gaps. €9M pledged globally. Atoms4Food covers crop improvement, soil water, animal health, pest control, food safety, nutrition.

Impact: National labs got equipment, analytical performance improved. Seed multiplication now underway. Reduces import dependency, helps 3.5 million food-insecure, near 20% population.

FAQ

How many new rice varieties did Burkina Faso release?

Eight in 2025 using nuclear mutation breeding.

What yield do they give?

9-11 tonnes/ha vs national average 2.3 tonnes and old varieties 4-6 tonnes.

Is nuclear rice safe?

Yes. Radiation induces mutations, not radioactivity in grain. Same as natural mutation but faster. Eaten globally since 1950s.

What is Atoms4Food?

IAEA-FAO initiative 2023 using nuclear science for food security across six areas.

Why does Burkina Faso import half its rice?

Consumption doubled, rain-fed agriculture 92% vulnerable to drought, low yields. Government pushing domestic production.
